Friction. It's a funny thing - it happens for different reasons, in different ways, at different times.
And it's a very important thing: You can only walk because of the friction between your shoe and the floor - and that friction happens for two main two reasons: Firstly because the imperfections in the surface of the shoe, and the imperfections in the surface of the floor (called asperities in sciencese), catch against each other. And, secondly, because if the two surfaces are clean then they will chemically bond together.
So if the floor is smooth and waxed...
