Railgun!

As I said in a previous post: Sometimes my fellow nerds worry me. But what really worries me is when they get real funding behind them. This often results in what you see below.....



What you've just seen is a rail gun: It's basically two conducting rails with a conducting armature between them. When a current is applied it causes a Lorentz force that accelerates a projectile held between the rails - and the technical details are here.

So, like all the best doomsday weapons, you can build one in your garden shed for  under a hundred quid. This guy built a mini one, that shoots aluminium pellets, from stuff he got at his local Maplins......
