The Devil's Eagle...

There are lots and lots of ancient versions of animals that were freaking terrifying, and massive to boot. Things like Megoladon the mega shark, that could swallow humans like Pez.

But they never actually ate our ancestors, right? They all died out millions of years before humans existed!

Not New Zealand. Not the Haast's Eagle:

This mega bird was truly the last of the prehistoric giants. It dropped out of the sky at eighty kilometres an hour: Being attacked by it would have been like being hit by a breeze block dropped from an eighty story building.

A breeze block with claws as long as your fingers, that was aiming for the base of your skull.

And it only died out 600 years ago. There have even been unconfirmed reports of it in isolated parts of new Zealand and Australia as recently as the nineteenth century.

So if you are in a remote, unexplored, part of the world and an abnormally big shadow passes overhead... it's almost certainly not a Haast's Eagle. So you're fine.

All the same, do yourself a favour: Stay near the tree line.

And be ready to duck.
