NASA is being slightly smug today as, on top of their recent discovery of ancient water on Mars, their MESSENGER spacecraft has just completed this beautiful enhanced colour map of the planet Mercury:
This is the first time a comprehensive map of the burnt planet has been made, and the enhanced colours bring out details of the planets alien geology, and will help scientist work out how Mercury became the place it is today.
We suspect that heat, lots of sunlight, and lots more heat was involved. Just a guess.
But in spite of this world having surface temperatures of nearly 200 degrees Celsius, one of the other incredible discoveries MESSENGER has made is that there's ice at its poles!
